February in Italy is definitely the month of Carnival. Each city is invaded by masks and confetti, lights and colors that create a unique party atmosphere. The origins of the Carnival are very ancient and can be traced back to the Roman Saturnalia which were celebrated in honor of the new year, but also to the Lupercali and the Dionysiacs.

However the etymology of the term “carnival” derives, in all probability, from the Latin “carnem levare”, a popular expression to indicate the banquet that was held on the last day just before the period of abstinence and fasting of Lent.
