February in Italy is definitely the month of Carnival. Each city is invaded by masks and confetti, lights and colors that create a unique party atmosphere. The origins of the Carnival are very ancient and can be traced back to the Roman Saturnalia which were celebrated in honor of the new year, but also to the Lupercali and the Dionysiacs.
However the etymology of the term “carnival” derives, in all probability, from the Latin “carnem levare”, a popular expression to indicate the banquet that was held on the last day just before the period of abstinence and fasting of Lent.
There are carnivals in Italy of ancient traditions and internationally known, capable of attracting thousands of visitors from all over the world every year, and offering the opportunity to visit Italy.
In Tuscany the Carnival of Castiglion Fibocchi, the Carnival of Foiano della Chiana and of course the Carnival of Viareggio are very famous. Casa Pancole is strategically in the middle of this triangle and can be an excellent base camp to visit these Carnivals and also the territory of Chianti and Tuscany honoring this festival characterized by an immense enjoyment of food, drinks and sensual pleasures!
